Abstrakti

Decentralised knowledge work has been seen as one option for the diversification of the business structure of rural areas and for offering educated people the opportunity to combine rural living with working for knowledge companies in cities. This article studies the decentralisation of the activities of city-based knowledge companies in rural areas. Slightly less than one-fifth of the knowledge companies are willing to decentralise part of their activities in rural areas. Labour force is the most important location factor for the knowledge companies. The knowledge companies’ decentralisation is more closely related to their employees’ willingness to move to rural areas than to the companies’ strategic choices
